What is HEIC File Format? Everything You Need to Know

July 3, 2026  ·  3 min read  ·  Fourmeld Blog

You've probably seen .heic files when transferring iPhone photos to a Windows PC or Android phone. Here's what HEIC is and how to deal with it.

1

What HEIC stands for

HEIC = High Efficiency Image Container. It's Apple's implementation of the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) standard, adopted since iPhone 7 (iOS 11).

2

Why iPhones use HEIC

HEIC photos are about 50% smaller than JPG at the same quality. A 4MB JPG becomes a 2MB HEIC. This saves storage space on your iPhone.

3

Why HEIC doesn't open everywhere

HEIC requires patent-licensed codecs. Windows 10/11 needs a paid codec from the Microsoft Store. Android doesn't support it natively.

FAQs

Can Windows 11 open HEIC files?

Windows 11 can open HEIC files if you install the free "HEIF Image Extensions" from the Microsoft Store. Without it, HEIC files show as unrecognized.

Should I turn off HEIC on iPhone?

Go to Settings → Camera → Formats → "Most Compatible" to shoot in JPG instead. You lose some storage efficiency but photos work everywhere.

Is HEIC better quality than JPG?

HEIC achieves the same visual quality as JPG at half the file size. The quality difference is negligible to human eyes.
